Hair color advice.. what does the shade ash mean?

I believe I am a medium brown.. want to color my hair, but don't want to go dark, as I am pale.. and in my 40's..(always heard at this age, suppose to go light).. Anyway, not sure if I should get a med/or light ash brown.. or a golden brown.. ?.. All I know is that I don't want it to turn a reddish shade after awhile.. Any advice on what shade of brown.? p.s. I am also in my 40's. I just started coloring my hair a few years ago. I have dark brown hair and eyes. I first bought dark brown dye because I figured that was my hair color but it came out almost black. I now buy medium brown and it comes out dark brown. You might want to try light ash brown. Don't buy anything that says warm,or Cinnamon because it will have the red tints that you don't want. Also I would buy a semi permanent color. It washes out in about 28 washes. Do this until you are find the right color for you and then go to a permanent color if you want.
means it has gray in it. do not buy ash.
