I have virgin (no dye) dark - brown/black hair and I wanted to make my first try at dying it at home. I am afraid that most haircolor will not show because my natural hair color is so dark to begin with. I would like to end up with a warm medium golden brown color, like the Garnier Nutrisse chocolate caramel. Do you usually pick a lighter shade (light brown, for example) so that you end up with the color you want, or should I just pick the color I want since it wont lighten anymore anyway?Need hair color advice for dark hair?
Hi:)
A professional colorist broke it down for me once-if you want to go lighter, you have to lift, and if you want to go darker, you have to deposit. In order to lift color, you have to do a certain degree of bleaching in order for any other color to show up. If you have healthy 'virgin' hair, I would strongly recommend (if you can afford it) having a professional do the color the first time. After that, you can do your own color maintenance for several months.
If you don't want to/can't go to a salon, you could always see if there are any hair academies/training schools that offer appointments. These people are trained and you can get color done for waaaay cheaper than a salon. Of course, there's always a little risk, but it's just food for thought!Need hair color advice for dark hair?
