Anything you do to your hair is damaging to some extent. Some things, like shampooing, is necessary, and you minimize the damage, and take steps to repair the hair.

The particular brand is up to you... they are all basically the same, with differences in base tones, or additives. As to damage, as long as you understand what you are doing to the hair, and how you can correct the damage, then you will be fine. Talk it over with your hairdresser as well.
bleach is obviously the most damaging...but sometimes i think it's necessary since i'm blonde =) go to a salon and ask what they think. i prefer to go to a salon to get my hair done cause i don't trust myself or my friends to to a goo job. when you dye at a salon they use special shampoos and conditioners afterward too, plus they can mix colors together to get it just right.
