What hair color should I use and for how long?

I dyed my hair what was supposed to be dark brown about a month ago. It turned black and I ended up really loving it. However, it is now starting to fade to a brown in some places and I don't want it. I want it to all be black. What type of dye should I use and how long should I leave it on without frying my ends? I left it on like 15 minutes before and I got split ends.What hair color should I use and for how long?
