Temporary hair color (known as semi- or demi- permanent) only works when you're trying to darken your hair (or cover grays). My suggestion is to go to your hairstylist and ask for her to foil in a few blonde highlights around the crown of your head. only permanent hair color and bleach make it go lighter.

There are a number of new hair colors that are a) semi-permanent, and/or b) designed for dark/medium brown hair - this will keep your hair from looking red or brassy when you color it.
So look for a dye that specifically is designed for darker hair - and even highlights that are designed for darker hair.
